Tasmania’s first community micro-grid

03 May, 2021

Mode were delighted to respond to the challenge of designing and installing Tasmania’s first community micro-grid on the Tasman Peninsula, a lovely corner of Tasmania notorious for erratic power supply.

The system of 25.6kW of high-performance SunPower Solar PV with 54 kWh of Tesla Powerwall battery storage was carefully constructed to allow tenants to share solar PV during the day, supplement power usage overnight, and provide emergency power during network outages.

The ground-breaking Nubeena Residential Microgrid was commissioned as a pilot study by Tasman Peninsula Power Inc. (TPP) to examine the feasibility of future micro-grids in the Tasman Peninsula.

” We couldn’t be more pleased with our first months of operation… so far it has all been positive. We hope this will be the first of many local community energy projects.” – Paul Sutton (Chair of TPP)

Although still early into the 2-year pilot study, initial results have been very promising, with Tenants observing a significant reduction in power bills and seamless provision of power during outages. We’ll observe how the system performs through Winter with keen interest.
